Newcastle beat Steven Gerrards Rangers to sign 16-year-old Queens Park starlet Reagan Thomson

NEWCASTLE UNITED have agreed a deal for top Scottish kid Reagan Thomson from under the noses of Steven Gerrard's Rangers.

The Toon will sign the Queens Park midfielder, 16, who has already made the senior side at the famous Glasgow outfit.

Thomson has been chased by several sides in recent months but the chance to go to Newcastle and into their reserve side has swung it.

He has been likened to John Fleck, the new Scotland cap at Sheffield United, and will agree personal terms before joining officially when the window opens next month.

Queen's amateur status means the club don't normally command transfer fees but because the midfielder is still a youth player they would be entitled to compensation.

The Scottish League Two side, set to turn professional after 152 years as amateurs, hoped to make the youngster one of their first paid players.

Newcastle were thought to have upped the £35,000 offer they attempted earlier this month, with Rangers unable to match the Toon's bid.

In October it emerged Celtic were also tracking the Scotland U-17 ace, who has made nine appearances for Queen's Park so far.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also set to battle Sheffield United and Bournemouth for Everton defender Mason Holgate.

Versatile Holgate — rated at £14million by the Toffees — has made 12 appearances this season.

But the 23-year-old faces a fight to stay in the Everton team with Seamus Coleman set to return from injury.
